Homeland Democrats Write DHS Urging Deprioritizing Deportation and Detention of Vulnerable Children, Elderly, Pregnant Mothers, Disabled

“Immigration enforcement must be conducted in a manner that respects human life and that protects innocent and vulnerable individuals from harm”

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI), led Committee Democrats in sending a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin regarding the department’s alarming detention and deportation of individuals with serious medical conditions and specialized medical needs – including elderly residents in nursing home care, pregnant women, and children with cancer with no criminal record.

“For individuals who have specialized medical needs and are not a threat to society, consideration should be given to allowing them to continue their medical care in appropriate settings with the providers who understand their medical history,” the Member wrote. “To detain or deport someone without consideration of their medical needs could be a death sentence.”

“We ask that you prioritize going after individuals with criminal records who pose a threat and deprioritize individuals with specialized medical needs with no criminal records, including children, the elderly, the disabled, pregnant or nursing mothers, and other medically vulnerable people,” the Members added.
