Homeland Security Dems Write DHS & FBI on the Federal Government’s Response to Protests Around the Country

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Democratic Members of the Committee sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI regarding reports of extremist involvement in protests arounds the country - and how DHS and the FBI are responding while ensuring that Americans’ civil rights and civil liberties are protected.  In recent days, Federal officials, including the President, have suggested that far-left extremists are to blame for violence and unrest without sharing evidence.  However, media reports and statements from state officials have suggested that far-right extremists and white supremacists are the ones sowing chaos and inciting violence.  In addition, the Members have requested an intelligence briefing from DHS and FBI.  The Members wrote: “The stakes—including the protection of Americans’ physical safety and their Constitutional rights—are enormous.”

In the letter, the Members request:

  • All intelligence products related to the ongoing protests
  • All documents on the designation of groups as domestic terrorist organizations
  • All documents on the deployment of DHS employees and assets
  • All documents related to the surveillance of protestors
