Ranking Members Thompson and Magaziner Demand Hearing on Rising Terror Threats Since Start of Iran War

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, sent a letter to Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino demanding an immediate hearing on the Trump administration’s counterterrorism efforts amid a worsening threat environment and their lack of transparency with Congress and the American people.

This demand follows four high-profile extremist attacks since the start of the war with Iran.

“As Members of the Committee on Homeland Security, it is our responsibility to receive a full terrorism threat picture and understand how the administration is working to protect Americans from terrorist attacks,” the Ranking Members wrote. “To date, the Committee has failed to conduct proper oversight of the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the vulnerability of the U.S. to terrorism.”

“The consequences of a failure to ensure this accountability are grave,” the Ranking Members added.

The Ranking Members are calling on Chairman Garbarino to immediately convene a hearing with senior administration officials to provide a full assessment of the current threat landscape, as well as detail the steps currently being taken to protect the homeland.
