Reps. Inquire on Campaign Event Security
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency, sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to ask for details on how the Department of Homeland Security maintains situational awareness at widely-attended presidential campaign events, some of which have had numerous incidents of violence.
In the letter, the members write:
“[P]ublic safety should be of utmost concern. Recognizing the sheer magnitude of some rallies, the potential for violent activity at certain events, and the stature of the presidential candidates, it is imperative that the Department maintains situational awareness and provides its state and local partners with the necessary support.”
