Thompson: Committee Jurisdiction and Legislation Must Be The Priority Next Congress
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, sent a letter to three Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee Chairs, Reps. Mike Rogers (R-AL), Candice S. Miller (R-MI), and Michael T. McCaul (R-TX), regarding the next Congress which begins in January. These three Committee members are seen as possible replacements as the Committee on Homeland Security Chair for the 113th Congress. In the letter, Ranking Member Thompson emphasizes that consolidation of homeland security jurisdiction in Congress must remain a top priority – and will require bipartisan coordination.
With consolidated jurisdiction, the Department of Homeland Security will be better able to execute its mission and perform its critical functions with better efficiency. Congressman Thompson also highlights the Committee's lackluster legislative performance in the 112th Congress – noting that for the first time ever, the Committee failed to have a piece of major legislation considered on the House floor. Ranking Member Thompson believes legislative success and defending the Committee's legislative prerogatives go hand-in-hand with expanding the Committee's jurisdiction.
