Thompson, Ivey Transmit Evidence to Archives for its Review into DHS IG’s Destruction of Federal Records
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD), Ranking Member of the Committee’s Oversight, Investigations, & Accountability Subcommittee, sent a letter to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) providing evidence that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General Joseph Cuffari may have violated Federal law by willfully destroying Federal records and not reporting the destruction to NARA. This evidence includes internal Office of the Inspector General documents. After the IG admitted to deleting text messages from his official government phone on an ongoing basis and as a “normal practice” during Congressional testimony last month, NARA opened a review into his recordkeeping practices.
“We ask that after reviewing these documents, and other relevant information that NARA obtains, NARA consult with the Department of Justice if the evidence confirms that Inspector General Cuffari failed to notify NARA about unlawful destruction of Federal records, in violation of the law,” the Members wrote.
