Thompson, Rogers Write Acting DHS Secretary Wolf After Department Fails to Comply with Subpoena

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), Ranking Member of the Committee, sent a letter to Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf regarding the Committee’s subpoena to the Department for border security documents.  The Department did not meet the subpoena’s December 11th deadline.

Letter text:

Dear Acting Secretary Wolf:

As you know, on November 20, 2019, the Committee on Homeland Security approved by voice vote a resolution authorizing the issuance of a subpoena for certain border security documents, and a subpoena was issued pursuant to that vote later that day. The subpoena required the production of the responsive documents by December 11, 2019.

Today, nearly a year after materials were initially requested from then-Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and a week after the deadline for production pursuant to the subpoena, the Committee has yet to receive any documents. This is unacceptable. You are required to produce the responsive documents, which are essential to the Committee’s oversight of the Department’s border security activities, including the treatment of children in custody, the separation of families, and metering of individuals at ports of entry.

We urge you to ensure the Department complies with the subpoena without further delay.
