Thompson Statement on Trump’s Extreme Immigration Restrictions

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on news President Trump is extending limits on worker visas through 2020, greatly restricting immigration to the country.

“Once again the Trump Administration is using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to further extreme anti-immigrant policies. Stopping immigrants from legally coming to this country serves no real economic or public health purpose and will only serve to pander to President Trump’s base and the extreme right in the lead up to the presidential election.  In fact, this new policy will only serve to damage economic recovery in the long term and hurt our ability to attract top talent.  We cannot allow President Trump to continue to scapegoat immigrants just to serve his political ends. We cannot allow President Trump to bankrupt U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, leaving it unable to perform its homeland security functions.  Instead of capitalizing on fear and making false promises to the American public, he should focus on correcting his Administration’s failed coronavirus response.  I intend to work with my colleagues to fight this order.”
