Thompson Statement on the Administration’s Budget Request for the Department of Homeland Security
Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the President's Fiscal Year 2025 Budget request for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):
“I commend the Biden-Harris Administration for prioritizing investments in the DHS workforce, Federal cybersecurity, and disaster resilience while upholding a commitment to humane border enforcement. However, I remain concerned about the Administration’s reliance on emergency funding via the Southwest Border Contingency Fund to fully address the Department’s border security and immigration enforcement needs.
Furthermore, the Department is currently facing a budget shortfall due to Republicans’ failure to provide urgently needed supplemental funding for DHS to enforce immigration laws, effectively counter fentanyl, and secure the border. I urge my Republican colleagues to finally pass a bipartisan DHS appropriations package for the current fiscal year, including the supplemental funding needed by the Department.
In the coming weeks, I look forward to engaging with the Administration on this funding proposal and how the Department plans to carry out its diverse and critical mission under the limitations negotiated within the Fiscal Responsibility Act.”
