BREAKING: Thompson Statement on Shooting in Arizona Earlier Today

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement in regards to the tragic shooting today at a constituent event in Tucson, Arizona involving Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

I was shocked and saddened to learn about the tragic and senseless shooting in Tucson, Arizona today involving my dear friend and colleague, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and her constituents and staff.

As Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, I visited her district last July and watched her in action. Throughout the visit, Gabby's concern about the challenges facing the residents of her district was evident. I believe public service is a high and humble calling and I know Gabby is deeply driven to serve both her constituents and the nation.

She has been a gifted and invaluable Member of Congress, and, like myself, is committed to the mission of homeland security. My prayers are with her and her family and all of the families of the victims of today's tragedy.
