Chairman Thompson: Spread of Doctored Videos Shows We Must Do More to Secure Our Elections and Stop Fake News

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the need to improve election security and stop the propagation of fake news:

"Doctored videos like this are not only vile, partisan trash, they are a sad omen of what is to come in the 2020 election season. When it comes to preventing election interference and the propagation of fake news, the Administration has failed to lead and Republicans in Congress have demonstrated little interest in preventing a repeat of 2016. House Democrats are addressing these issues head on, but the Republican Senate has made it clear that it will not tackle serious national security issues without direction from the White House.

“It is also time for social media companies to act responsibly after they were caught flat footed in 2016. They are on notice. The American people know the integrity of our democracy is at stake, and that it's time to act.  I urge the Senate to take up H.R. 1 immediately and work with the House to accomplish what needs to be done to secure our democracy.”
