Chairman Thompson Statement on CBP Investigation into the Mistreatment of Migrants in Del Rio, Texas
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility releasing the findings of its investigation into the mistreatment of migrants in Del Rio, Texas, on September 19, 2021:
“The disturbing findings issued by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility raise serious questions about command, control, and communications within CBP. Particularly troubling is the Office's finding that Border Patrol agents, in support of a State law enforcement entity, engaged in activities that ‘directly contravened USBP operational objectives and resulted in the unnecessary use of force against migrants.'
“These activities were not in line with CBP's mission or values. All migrants encountered in the United States should be processed humanely – including those subject to Title 42. In the coming days, I look forward to engaging with DHS and CBP Leadership on not just the disciplinary recommendations stemming from this incident, but broader action to prevent future violations."
