Chairman Thompson Statement on DHS Whistleblower Allegations
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the numerous disturbing allegations in the whistleblower complaint filed by Department of Homeland Security official Brian Murphy:
“The whistleblower complaint filed by Brian Murphy is a damning – but wholly unsurprising – indictment of the Trump Administration and officials at the Department of Homeland Security. As Chad Wolf and Ken Cuccinelli – who are not even serving in their positions legally – continue to ratchet up their politicization of the Department in order to preserve the President’s political future, they are endangering our national security, compromising the legitimacy of the upcoming election, and feeding misinformation to the American people and Congress. These allegations are just the latest to expose an apparent whole-of-government effort to help the President in his flailing reelection campaign. All allegations in this report – including for perjury and breaking federal law – must be fully investigated.
“This is not complicated: Trump Administration officials are consistently prioritizing the President’s personal and corrupt priorities over our national security. It has been obvious for some time, but Mr. Wolf and Mr. Cuccinelli need to resign from Federal service. Their toxic and unethical actions are wholly incompatible with the non-partisan mission of the Department of Homeland Security.
“In a year the country is facing a pandemic that has killed almost 200,000 Americans, massive election misinformation campaigns, and the continued rise of right-wing violent extremism, the American people deserve to know they are getting the unvarnished truth from their leaders and that their priorities are in line with keeping the country safe.”
