Chairman Thompson Statement on Updated DHS Public Bulletin on the Domestic Terrorism Threat

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Majorkas issuing a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) bulletin on the current domestic terrorism threat:

“I am glad to see Secretary Mayorkas and DHS leadership taking important steps to inform the public about threats to our homeland security both here and from abroad.  I look forward to continuing to work with DHS to mitigate these threats. It is critical to note that the domestic terrorism threat increasingly has common threads in grievance-based violence.

“I commend DHS for providing the public with actionable information as we ease COVID-related restrictions throughout the country and as we continue to see domestic violent extremists, foreign terrorist groups, and malign foreign influences try to use online platforms to distract us and sow discord.

“Many of the threats outlined in today’s bulletin persist from the long shadow cast by the January 6 attack on the Capitol. That is why it is critical Congress comes together to pass legislation to create a commission to investigate the attack and what led to it. The legislation I introduced with Ranking Member Katko today aims to do exactly that.”
