Murder Suspect in FPS Shooting Death in Oakland Linked to Right Wing Extremism

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on news that prosecutors have filed federal charges following the murder of an officer of the Federal Protective Service (FPS), part of the Department of Homeland Security:

“I am relieved to hear news that Federal prosecutors have filed murder charges in the tragic shooting death in Oakland last month of David Patrick Underwood, a Federal Protective Service Protective Service Officer.

“It is critical to note that the suspect was not with those protesting the death of George Floyd, but appears to be associated with the Boogaloo movement, a violent, right-wing, anti-government extremist ideology whose adherents have sought to incite violence and sow chaos by coopting legitimate Constitutionally protected protests in recent weeks.  The threat from right-wing extremists and other domestic terrorists is a top threat today. I hope and expect that the Federal government is devoting the necessary resources to tracking and investigating violent right-wing extremism.  We cannot allow these extremists to further their dangerous and deadly objectives.”
