Ranking Member Thompson Marks the Start of the 2015 Hurricane Season

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement marking the start of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season:

On the opening day of the Atlantic hurricane season, we should remind ourselves that each one of us has an important role to play in ensuring that our families and communities are prepared for what may come before, during, and after a potential storm. This year, forecasters are predicting a below average or average hurricane season. But nearly ten years ago, Hurricane Katrina taught us that we cannot be complacent. We must remain vigilant. Preparedness begins in our communities – at our businesses, our schools, and in our homes. We must continue the progress we have made in building our preparedness capacity with investments to both our local governments and first responders and by engaging the whole community in preparedness planning.
