Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Kristi Noem Buying Luxury Jets With Taxpayer Money During the Republican Shutdown for Her Personal Use
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem buying multiple Gulfstream luxury jets with $172 million in taxpayer money for her personal use:
“Secretary Noem spending almost $200 million on multiple luxury jets for her to travel around the world for more photo-ops is wholly inappropriate. The fact that she’s doing it during a Federal government shutdown while most of the DHS workforce is working without pay is completely vile. Such spending is blatantly immoral — and probably illegal – and Congress must investigate. We said hell no to her request for a $50 million jet earlier this year, but now she went ahead with it anyway while quadrupling it. Pretending that this purchase was required for ‘safety’ when Coast Guard service members are forced to use mission critical aircraft dating back to the 1980s is the height of hypocrisy.
“While the nation suffers under this corrupt and extreme administration, Secretary Noem is fleecing the American taxpayers to live in luxury. Not only does she now have multiple fancy jets to use, she lives rent-free on Coast Guard property. Though she may think she’s untouchable and above oversight, I promise: her corruption will have consequences.”
