Ranking Member Thompson Statement on the Coast Guard Eliminating Race-Based Preferences for Commissioning College Students
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the U.S. Coast Guard eliminating race-based preferences for college students who wish to enlist and commission as officers:
“It is quite ironic for the Trump administration to give us a lecture on merit and fairness when Donald Trump has – since day one – been on a crusade against women and minorities in our Armed Forces and has also appointed countless unqualified individuals to important leadership positions across the Federal government. For nearly a century, administrations of both parties have strived to ensure our military reflected the diversity of the nation without diminishing any standards or qualifications. Even Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court majority refused to end affirmative action at military academies because of the military’s ‘distinct interests.’ Abandoning decades of progress now will only make us less safe.”
