Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Threats to the Homeland After DHS Issues National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the Department of Homeland Security issuing a National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin:
“It is completely irresponsible for Kristi Noem and DHS to issue a terrorism alert to the nation without any context – as if current events are happening in a vacuum. To be clear, we are at an increased threat level today – and apparently for at least the next three months – because of Donald Trump’s actions in the Middle East.
“We are also more vulnerable to attack today because the Trump administration has decimated our cyber defenses in the name of ‘government efficiency’. We are more vulnerable to attack today because the Trump administration has prioritized low level immigration enforcement over counterterrorism. We are more vulnerable to attack today because Kristi Noem is unable to do her job to protect the homeland and is instead using her time to whine about Harvard and plan another international trip for more mass deportation photo ops.
“The Trump administration trying to blame the previous administration – and anyone else – for the consequences of its own actions is the epitome of gaslighting. We need more information on the increased threat level, and I demand a classified briefing from DHS and the FBI on how the nation will be impacted. Relevant counterterrorism officials should also be made available to testify on what they are doing to keep the country safe.”
