Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Trump Agreeing to Pay TSA Officers

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on President Trump finally agreeing to pay the TSA workforce:

“TSA officers keeping our skies secure have worked admirably throughout the Trump shutdown, and they deserve to be paid already. Time and again, Democrats have attempted to advance clean funding bills for TSA – only to be blocked by Republicans on behalf of Trump.

“Now, finally, Trump is agreeing to pay them, but it's not clear how he plans to do so legally – just as it is unclear how he has been paying some of DHS’s workforce but not others. Of course, everyone knows that Trump and Congressional Republicans don’t care about TSA’s workforce – they blocked better pay for them for years and are now in court to take away their union rights, but are naturally all too eager to use them as a pawn for their political games. For what they’ve gone through, TSA’s workforce deserves not only to be paid but receive a bonus as well. If Republicans believe what they say, they should agree.

“By manufacturing a crisis, sending armed ICE agents to airports across the country, and using the treasury as he wishes, it is clear Trump is following an authoritarian playbook to claim expanded powers and do God-knows-what next. Democrats will oppose these antics and continue to fight for the rule of law.”
