Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Trump’s Border and Immigration Executive Orders
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on President Trump’s border security and immigration executive orders:
“With this barrage of executive orders, President Trump wants Americans to think he is fixing the border - but he is doing nothing of the sort. His actions will hurt our communities, create unnecessary chaos, and cost American taxpayers billions of dollars every year. In true Trump fashion, he is choosing bluster over substance and partisan politics over people.
“To be clear, there were fewer people crossing the southern border over the last few months than when President Trump last left office. Instead of taking meaningful action, President Trump chose to declare an ‘emergency,’ block the resettlement of Afghan allies who risked their lives for our military, and cancel Biden Administration policies that helped CBP lower encounters at the border.
“Sadly, today’s executive actions seem designed to inflict cruelty on vulnerable populations to fear-monger and falsely claim he’s taking serious action on the border. I am concerned these actions will inevitably ensnare American citizens and hurt our economy while raising prices for us all.
“As I have said for years, I will work with anyone who wants to reform our immigration system and better manage our borders. But I will work to stop anyone who flouts the rule of law and ignores our sacred American values.”
