Ranking Member Thompson: Trump Administration Continues to Undermine America’s Preparedness Against Terrorism
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement after the Trump administration announced preparedness grant awards while billions of dollars in critical emergency and counterterrorism funding remain subject to new immigration and election-related conditions that States are challenging in court:
“This week, the Trump administration announced preparedness grant awards but conveniently left out the fact that over $1 billion in counterterrorism funding is being held hostage as the administration tries to force cities and States to assist in its cruel immigration enforcement policies and comply with so-called “election security” requirements. Instead of walking back their misguided requirements, the Trump administration is forcing States and counties to file lawsuits for their rightfully owed funding, leaving first responders and communities at a disadvantage in the fight against terrorism.
“Preparedness grants help first responders prepare for and respond to terrorist attacks, support critical equipment and training, and strengthen the capabilities communities rely on to keep everyone safe. When the Trump administration withholds these resources, it is putting partisan politics ahead of the basic responsibility to protect Americans.
“The Trump administration should stop playing politics with the security of American communities and immediately rescind their irrelevant and potentially unlawful preparedness grant funding restrictions so that States and localities can prepare for the threats they face every day.”
