Ranking Members Thompson & Kennedy Statement on Trump Administration Ending the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities Grant Program

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Tim Kennedy (D-NY), Ranking Member of the Emergency Management and Technology subcommittee, released the joint statement below on the Trump Administration ending FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program – that the Trump Administration started in 2018 – and taking away billions in grants from communities:

“Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Kristi Noem are robbing our communities of funds they applied for and were lawfully awarded by FEMA. Donald Trump may have forgotten, but he signed the BRIC program into law in 2018 and it was his administration that stood up the entire program. It is cruel and outrageous that the administration is taking money away from communities while at the same time millions of Americans are under the threat of catastrophic flooding.

“Contrary to the administration’s claims of wasteful spending, BRIC provides communities with the tools to prepare for and recover from disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. We have no idea what DHS is referring to when it claims that the program was overtaken by political agendas when every state in the country applied for program.

“Taking this funding away leaves Americans exposed and vulnerable, especially as the climate crisis intensifies. We call on this administration to immediately reverse course and ensure our communities get the funding they need and were lawfully awarded.”
