Ranking Members Thompson & Kennedy: Trump Administration Continuing to Call for Elimination of FEMA and Play Politics with its Workforce Will Cost Lives
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Tim Kennedy (D-NY), Ranking Member of the Emergency Management and Technology subcommittee, released the joint statement below on the Trump Administration’s continued efforts to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency and hamper its workforce:
“With nearly two months until the start of hurricane season, it is completely irresponsible and reckless for the Trump Administration to continue to call for the elimination of FEMA – as Secretary Noem reiterated yesterday – and to purposely hamper its critical reservist workforce. Obviously, this has created even more chaos for FEMA’s workforce – just as the agency recently fired hundreds of employees and had to rehire them due a court order. Playing political games with the Federal government’s disaster response workforce will cost lives. It is the responsibility of this Administration to ensure our disaster response infrastructure is effective and ready to deploy at any time.”
