Sheriff Clarke Has No Business Serving at DHS
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on news reports of David Clarke’s potential appointment, without Senate confirmation, at the Department of Homeland Security Office of Public Engagement:
“Although the Department of Homeland Security refuses to say if this selection has been made, it is very clear that Clarke has no business serving the American people, period. His tenure as Sheriff of Milwaukee County has been plagued with turmoil—including his notorious, diabolical treatment of inmates at the county jail. There is absolutely no reason for him to be in a position of influence within the federal government, and his appointment would be a disaster waiting to happen. It is critical that Clarke not serve in this Administration, and I urge Secretary Kelly to pick someone more suited for this role.”
