Statement on the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

March 11, 2011 (WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the earthquake and tsunami in Japan today:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan and the victims of today's devastating earthquake and tsunami.  As the President pledged this morning, the full resources of the United States government - including our military, the Coast Guard and FEMA – stand ready to assist when needed. I have been briefed by FEMA on the planned Federal response and assistance in response. While I am encouraged by early reports of minimal damage along the West Coast, I will continue monitoring the situation through briefings with FEMA and state and local officials to ensure our first responders in the affected communities have the resources they need to ensure the continued safety of our citizens.
