Thompson: After Trump Comments, We Must Pass Election Security Act Now
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the need to pass election security legislation after President Trump welcomed another attack on our elections and democratic institutions.
“President Trump’s appalling, irresponsible statements that he would again welcome a foreign attack on our elections and democratic institutions mean Congress must act now. The Election Security Act will address the very threat underscored by the President’s reckless remarks. Democrats understand the gravity of efforts by foreign governments to undermine confidence in our democratic institutions and have been working to enact legislation that would prevent foreign influence operations since 2016.”
“In light of the President’s comments, the time has come to act on the Election Security Act, which would improve the security of our State and local election infrastructure and help protect the integrity of democratic institutions from being undermined by misinformation and influence campaigns. I ask my colleagues to join me in urging this bill be passed by the House as quickly as possible. The integrity of our democracy is at stake.”
