Thompson: Sessions Must Resign, Be Nowhere Near Investigation

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the need for an independent commission to investigate all Administration and campaign ties to Russia.

“As news reports continue to trickle in on this Administration’s shady cast of characters, the country realizes what Coretta Scott King always knew: that Jeff Sessions cannot be trusted with the humble responsibility of the scales of justice.  As a longtime opponent of civil rights, it now seems he lied to Congress and has something to hide.  He must resign and cannot be within the same ZIP Code of an investigation into this Administration.  This is a White House that has clear issues with the truth and seems scarily comfortable with keeping it from the American people.  This White House brought all these issues on itself and has no business pretending it is the victim of dirty tricks.”

“Last year our democracy was attacked by a foreign power while attempting to influence an election - and now it seems reported dealings between Russia and the Trump campaign are too numerous to count.  All this while an investigation has barely begun. We need the Department of Justice to fully investigate this matter and we need Congress to begin bipartisan investigations with the Administration’s full cooperation.  More importantly, however, we must stand up a fully independent commission – much like the 9/11 Commission – to investigate every possible angle of this mess.”
