Thompson Statement on Administration Plans for Mass Deportation

(WASHINGTON) – Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the immigration enforcement memos released by the Department of Homeland Security today:

“The memos DHS released today show that the Trump Administration is more concerned with attempting to fulfill misguided campaign promises than doing what is best for the safety and security of the country.  Campaign season is over. This Administration must face the difficult choices of governing and be accountable to the American people.  Unfortunately, President Trump seems dead set on creating a massive deportation force and labeling anyone undocumented for expedited removal just to boost deportation numbers.”

“Resources are not unlimited: when available resources are used to detain and remove law-abiding immigrants and break apart families, there are less resources to find and remove dangerous criminals from our streets.  As a diverse country of immigrants, we need an immigration policy that reflects our history, upholds our values, and provides proper due process. Democrats must stand together against this Administration’s unwise and heartless immigration policies.”
