Thompson Statement on DHS Progress Report on 9/11 Commission Recommendations

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement regarding the 2011 Progress Report released by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Implementing 9/11 Commission Recommendations:

I commend DHS for their candor. This DHS progress report shows not only the progress, but also the challenges the agency and the nation continue to face. As we move forward, we must focus on resolving these remaining challenges – many of which have been lingering for a decade.

In the current fiscal environment, we still must find a way to encourage faster implementation of risk based security screening, address interoperability problems faced by our first responders, address the cyber threat to our networks and critical infrastructure, and develop a biometric exit solution to track visitors leaving the country. The Administration and Congress must follow through on our promise to protect our homeland by sealing the remaining security gaps.
