Thompson Statement on Trump Administration Forcing Asylum Seekers to Remain in Mexico

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on Trump Administration’s new policy of forcing those legally claiming asylum to remain in Mexico:

“With President Trump still threatening to shut down the government and refusing to admit defeat on his completely unnecessary wall, the Administration is now hell-bent on taking out its frustration on vulnerable people fleeing violence by making our asylum process even more difficult.  Today’s announcement threatens to put migrants in greater danger. Like with many of the Administration’s recent anti-immigrant policies, this can – and should – be stopped by our Courts. It is sad, though unsurprising, to see Secretary Nielsen go to extremes to do the White House’s bidding just to keep her job.  The Trump Administration is in desperate need of real oversight.  These failed immigration policies and purposeful cruelty must stop.”
