Cyber Security Guidance Available - But Must Be In Industry Planning Documents

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement in response to a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report he requested on the cybersecurity guidance for entities with cyber-reliant critical infrastructure, such as power utilities and communications networks. The report, entitled Critical infrastructure Protection: Cybersecurity Guidance Available, but More can be Done to Promote Its Use (GAO-12-92), found that guidance is generally available though may not be industry specific and may not be included in the proper planning documents.

"On a positive note, this report shows that cybersecurity compliance guidance is readily promoted and disseminated by the Department of Homeland Security. However, in the future we should ensure that this guidance is included in DHS-required Critical Infrastructure sector planning documents. This practice would be common sense and security focused."
