Report Shows Reform Needed for TSA Contract Screening Program
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement in response to a Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (DHS OIG) report on the "Transportation Security Administration's Screening Partnership Program" (OIG-13-99):
"This report from the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General shows that TSA has failed to accurately and precisely document the factors considered prior to approving applications for allowing airports to transition federal screener jobs to contractor work. Additionally, TSA continues to struggle with developing a consistent and reliable model for conducting cost assessments. It is critical that TSA fully document all factors considered when outsourcing federal security jobs. The agency must also implement practices to evaluate cost in a consistent and reliable manner."
"Earlier this year, I introduced H.R. 1455, the 'Contract Screener Reform and Accountability Act,' which would enhance oversight and accountability for the use of contract screeners at our nation's airports and require TSA to conduct cost assessments. This report provides further evidence that H.R. 1455 will bring necessary reforms to TSA's Screening Partnership Program. I urge my colleagues to support this measure, and I urge Administrator Pistole to implement the measures necessary to fully account for the cost of this program."
