Ogles and Ramirez Request Briefing from OpenAI Following Serious AI Security Incident
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Chairman Andy Ogles (R-TN) and Ranking Member Delia Ramirez (D-IL) announced they sent a letter to OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman requesting a briefing following reports that OpenAI models escaped a testing environment, exploited a zero-day vulnerability, and compromised third-party systems during an internal evaluation.
The Members are seeking additional information about the incident, including how OpenAI's models circumvented safeguards and why the activity was not identified sooner.
"The incident raises a number of serious questions regarding the rigor with which OpenAI secures and monitors its testing environments and the tools used to support them," the Members wrote. "Safety, security, and innovation must coexist."
According to public reporting, OpenAI models gained internet access from an otherwise isolated testing environment, exploited a previously unknown software vulnerability, compromised Hugging Face's systems, and accessed accounts on additional third-party platforms before the activity was ultimately discovered and disrupted.
The Members requested a briefing as soon as possible.
