Thompson Writes ICE Detention Center Contractors on Rising Coronavirus Cases at Their Facilities
(WASHINGTON) – Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, sent letters to CoreCivic, Geo Group, LaSalle Corrections, Management & Training Corporation (MTC) – four corporations that manage detention facilities for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In the letters, Chairman Thompson requests more information on how the corporations are stopping the spread of coronavirus at their facilities.
Recent news reports indicate that these corporations are not doing enough – and may be preventing personnel and detainees from wearing masks. Additionally, neither ICE nor these corporations are reporting the number of personnel who test positive for coronavirus at contracted facilities. As of April 29, of the 425 detainee coronavirus cases ICE has reported, 332 have been from 21 facilities run by these four corporations.
“Detainees held in close quarters where the consistent maintenance of social distance is difficult or impossible are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19,” Chairman Thompson writes. “The Committee seeks information on the actions undertaken by ICE detention facility contractors to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 within their immigration detention facilities, including information on their compliance with COVID-19 control measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
