Democrats Advance Three Bipartisan Bills to Strengthen DHS and Improve Services for Americans
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement after the House’s passage of three bipartisan bills sponsored by Committee Democrats to strengthen DHS intelligence training, improve access to transportation workforce identifications, and make trusted traveler programs work better for families.
“Democrats are committed to passing legislation that strengthens DHS while making Americans safer and their lives easier,” said Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS). “These bills showcase the kind of bipartisan work the American people expect from Congress, I’m proud to see them pass the House.”
- H.R. 5109, the TWICE Act - sponsored by Rep. Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA): Requires TSA to improve access to the TWIC program for individuals nearing the end of incarceration by helping them prepare applications and navigate the appeals and waiver process.
- H.R. 7436, the Department of Homeland Security Intelligence and Analysis Training Act - sponsored by Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI): Requires standardized training for DHS intelligence employees, including civil rights, privacy, and intelligence standards.
- H.R. 9382, the NEXUS for Families Act – sponsored by Rep. Tim Kennedy (D-NY): Requires CBP to make it easier for families to apply for NEXUS together and schedule interviews at the same time.
“I am incredibly proud that my colleagues passed the TWICE Act, a bill which I know will have a lasting impact in Louisiana and across the country,” said Rep. Carter. “So many jobs in the United States require a TWIC card just to work behind a secure facility’s gate, and this bill gives returning citizens a fair shot and ensures that workforce training can improve people’s lives.”
“The NEXUS for Families Act is a commonsense solution that simplifies travel for families along the northern border and I’m incredibly proud to see it pass the House with bipartisan support,” said Congressman Tim Kennedy. “This is not just a win for Western New York – it’s a win for every business, attraction, and community that depends on cross-border travel. With this legislation, we are encouraging regular travel to and from Canada, streamlining the NEXUS process, and ensuring trusted traveler programs work for all families.”
