Chairwoman Rice to Lead Trip to Texas to Observe Border Situation Firsthand

(WASHINGTON) – This week, Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY), Chairwoman of the Committee on Homeland Security’s Border Security, Facilitation, and Operations Subcommittee, will lead a trip to the southern border to examine Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations. The group will visit processing centers, ports of entry, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers; and survey firsthand the current state of operations for processing asylum seekers and migrant families.

Joining Chairwoman Rice will be Vice Chair Lauren Underwood (D-IL), Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), and Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-CA).

Members will also meet with residents of the surrounding communities to hear about their experiences living at the border and how their lives have been affected by the Administration’s new immigration policies.

Chairwoman Rice said:

“In the past week, we’ve seen the Administration keep hundreds of migrants under a bridge, threaten to shut down the southern border, and ask Congress for permission to deport thousands of unaccompanied children en masse. These policies – like all the anti-immigrant policies that this Administration pushes – are antithetical to American values, will not help secure our homeland, and will not deter desperate asylum seekers from expressing their international legal rights. I am leading this trip so that we can better understand the current border situation and work toward more effective, humane and common-sense solutions.”
