TOMORROW: Committee to Hold Hearing Dedicated to Domestic Terrorism
(WASHINGTON) – Tomorrow, the Committee on Homeland Security, Chaired by Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), will hold a hearing dedicated to understanding and countering domestic terrorism. Since 2011, Congressman Thompson and Committee Democrats have requested hearings focused on domestic terrorism from Committee Republicans eight times. All eight were ignored or denied. During that same time, there have been numerous incidents and deaths at the hands of domestic terrorists in the United States.
This long-overdue hearing will examine how the federal government is countering domestic terrorism and how we can improve these efforts. The Committee will receive testimony from FBI, DHS, and DOJ on the threat of domestic terrorism and what their agencies are doing with federal, state, and local partners to counter these threats.
Chairman Thompson released the following statement on tomorrow’s hearing:
“In the last decade, we’ve experienced an alarmingly urgent and growing threat of domestic terrorism – including white supremacist terrorism and far-right extremism. But despite the increasing numbers of domestic terrorist attacks, many of those in power have largely ignored this national security threat due to political convenience. Thankfully the Committee’s silence on this issue is coming to an end and we will finally be able to closely examine domestic terrorism in a public forum. I look forward to tomorrow’s hearing as a positive first step toward learning more to stop the growing trends of terrorism and hate.”
