WEDNESDAY: Democrats to Hold Hearing on the Growing Surveillance State Under Trump

Members will receive testimony from citizen who had her Global Entry revoked after lawfully observing CBP

(WASHINGTON) – On Wednesday, June 10th, Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Committee on Homeland Security Democrats will hold a Democratic forum in Washington, DC to examine how the Trump Administration has expanded government surveillance, collected Americans’ personal data, and targeted individuals for political retaliation.

The hearing, entitled “Tracked and Targeted: The Unconstitutional Surveillance State,” comes amid growing concerns that the Trump Administration is building and implementing the infrastructure for a surveillance state capable of monitoring and targeting Americans on a scale not seen in modern history. Expert witnesses will discuss the dangers posed by a growing Federal surveillance apparatus, the impact on American citizens and lawful residents, and legislative solutions to safeguard our civil liberties.

Members will also hear from Nicole Cleland, a Minnesota resident who was retaliated against and had her Global Entry revoked by the Trump administration after lawfully observing CBP.

“Americans shouldn’t have to worry about their own government tracking them and collecting their data to create profiles on them,” said Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson. “The Trump Administration is expanding its surveillance powers with no real oversight. Congress has a responsibility to use its oversight and legislative power to shine a light on what’s happening and protect Americans’ Constitutional rights.”
