Hernández to Host Homeland Security Committee Site Visit to Puerto Rico
(WASHINGTON) – On Friday, June 12, Rep. Pablo José Hernández (D-PR) and Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, will lead a site visit with Committee Democrats to San Juan and Naranjito, Puerto Rico to assess recovery from Hurricanes Maria and Fiona and the 2019-2020 earthquakes.
On the ground, members will have an opportunity to engage with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) about the island’s recovery and will meet with Federal, territorial, and local officials about ongoing challenges related to education and energy, including the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Department of Education, and mayors from various municipalities.
"Nearly nine years after Hurricane Maria, families are still waiting on reconstruction funds that were promised to them for their homes, their schools, their hospitals, and a power grid they can rely on,” said Rep. Hernández. “Federal recovery funds have been allocated, but they have not reached communities with the speed or scale needed to complete the rebuilding that is needed. I welcome my colleagues to Puerto Rico so they can hear from those families directly and understand why we cannot afford more delay."
