WEDNESDAY: Homeland Security Hearing on Trump’s Mass Deportations and ICE & CBP Attacks on U.S. Citizens

WASHINGTON) – On Wednesday, April 22nd the Committee on Homeland Security will hold an official Full Committee hearing to conduct oversight of the Trump administration’s out-of-control mass deportations – which have led to U.S. Citizens being profiled, targeted, detained, attacked – and sometimes tragically killed – at the hands of ICE and CBP.

After Republicans declined to invite critical witnesses from ICE and CBP to come before the Committee to answer questions about what this administration has done to the country – and why the Department of Homeland Security is still shut down – Committee Democrats used House rules to force a “Minority Day Hearing” to get answers for the American people. Minority Day Hearings are extremely rare – only a handful have occurred in recent years – and are used to ensure the witnesses of the Minority’s choosing are invited to testify before the Committee.

At the request of Committee Democrats and pursuant to House Rules, the Chairman invited Trump White House officials Tom Homan and Stephen Miller – the chief architects of Trump mass deportations — to appear. Also at the request of Committee Democrats, invitations to testify were sent to four U.S. Citizens who have been shot, attacked, and detained by ICE and CBP. This will be the first time many of them have testified on the record.

“It is imperative that we hear from Tom Homan and Stephen Miller – the chief architects of Trump’s mass deportations – which have led to the deaths of U.S. citizens and terrorized our communities,” said Committee Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS). “I am glad that Democrats are leading and using the few tools available to us to hold this out-of-control administration to account. It is inexcusable that – with Republicans in charge of Congress – the Trump administration has evaded any semblance of oversight or accountability. Hopefully that will soon change.”

“Congressional Republicans are still doing whatever they can to protect President Trump – even with his approval rating taking a nosedive – and have shamefully abdicated Congress’ role to conduct oversight of the executive branch.”

“I am glad, however, that we will hear on the record from a few of those who have been attacked and hurt by this administration. They are profiles in courage, and I commend them for telling their stories after what they have been through.”
