Chairman Thompson Statement on DHS Watchdog Report Showing Border Patrol Failures in 2019 Death of Child in Custody

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) issuing a press release indicating it had completed its investigation into the death of Carlos Hernandez Vasquez, Guatemalan boy who died in U.S. Border Patrol care in Texas in 2019. Chairman Thompson also sent a letter to the OIG requesting the final report.

“The Office of Inspector General’s overdue summary of its investigation into the tragic death of Carlos Hernandez Vasquez in May 2019 shows deeply troubling failures by the Border Patrol. It is critical that the OIG share its full final report and CBP take corrective action to help ensure a tragedy like this never occurs again. The Committee will be continuing its investigation into this matter, including whether those who falsified records in this case were held accountable.”
