Chairman Thompson Commends Biden Administration Actions to Combat Extremism
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the Biden Administration’s actions to combat extremism, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcing the FY2022 awards for the Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) Grant Program and the White House holding the United We Stand Summit.
“I thank the Department for its continued efforts to combat domestic violent extremism and its support of the Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) Grant Program. I am pleased that the Department has awarded grants to 11 organizations this year that work with underserved populations that are often the targets of attacks, including, for the first time, two Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Alcorn State University in Mississippi and Southern University and A&M College in Louisiana. As outlined in the Department’s Equity Action Plan released earlier this year, advancing equity in DHS’s efforts to prevent domestic violent extremism is critical.
“I also thank President Biden for hosting the United We Stand Summit at the White House to counter the effects of hate-fueled violence and extremism on the country. While we all understand we still have a ways to go in this effort, it is clear we finally have an Administration that understands this effort requires a whole-of-government approach. The actions the Administration announced today, along with its partnerships with state and local governments, non-profits, and academia, make this clear.”
