Chairman Thompson Statement on New Domestic Terrorism Government Assessment

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Biden Administration’s unclassified summary of the joint comprehensive threat assessment on domestic violent extremism drafted by the Department of Homeland Security, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Department of Justice.

“The Intelligence Community has confirmed again what we all saw come to life on January 6th: domestic violent extremists, including white supremacists, continue to be the most lethal threat to the American public. Secretary Mayorkas confirmed his intent to fight this scourge in his testimony to the Committee yesterday, and President Biden’s policy review to examine how federal law enforcement, the intelligence community, and others can reduce this threat is a necessary step to reducing violence and supporting state and local first responders.

“I eagerly await the outcome of this 100-day review, as well as the production of the intelligence assessment and report on the domestic terrorism threat required by the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2020. These assessments will better position DHS to lead the way in fighting domestic terrorism.”
