Chairman Thompson Statement on President Biden’s New National Security Strategy

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, issued the below statement on the Biden Administration’s release of its new National Security Strategy:

“The Biden Administration’s National Security Strategy is a clear-eyed plan to strengthen national security, improve international cooperation, and protect the American people from imminent and emerging threats. I am pleased that the Administration is committed to reaffirming our key alliances and partnerships to ensure the United States remains competitive on the global stage.

“By prioritizing threats — including China’s intent to reshape world order around autocracy, the immediate threat Russia poses to global security, and cyber threats — the National Security Strategy lays out a plan to ensure we will continue to lead the world through cooperation and multilateralism with an emphasis on democratic values.  It also maintains focus on our continued fight against terrorist groups — al-Qaeda, ISIS, and their partners, and our increasing fight against threats from domestic violent extremists.

“This strategy marks a new chapter in American leadership. By emphasizing not only how great powers compete but also our shared challenges — including climate change, terrorism, pandemics, and food shortages — the Biden Administration is laying out how America can respond effectively to imminent and emerging global challenges. It rightly includes domestic investments in technology, innovation, the workforce, and critical emerging technologies as imperative to strengthening U.S. competitiveness in a globalized economy. I look forward to working with the Biden Administration to ensure the Federal government has all the available tools to implement the National Security Strategy and to protect the homeland.”
