Chairman Thompson Subpoenas DHS For Trusted Traveler Documents

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, issued a subpoena to the Honorable Chad Wolf of the Department of Homeland Security for documents and communications regarding the Department’s decision to summarily single out and ban New York residents from DHS Trusted Traveler programs, including Global Entry. The subpoena also demands documents relating to inaccurate or misleading information that the Administration provided to the Committee and Federal court. This subpoena follows three previous requests for compliance with the Committee’s investigation (here, here, and here).

“We have been forced to subpoena the Department today because after three requests and a Congressional hearing, we still don’t have the information we need to complete our investigation into why the Department banned New York residents from the Trusted Traveler programs for political reasons and then provided misleading and inaccurate information about its actions to our Committee,” said Chairman Thompson. “To be clear, the Committee will never simply accept inaccurate or misleading testimony and we have a Constitutional duty to investigate improper activity. We will hold this Department accountable for the many arbitrary and politically motivated decisions it has made under this Administration.”

“The Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly provided false testimony to our committee and has tried to stonewall our investigation at every turn,” added Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY), Chairwoman of the Border Security, Facilitation, and Operations Subcommittee. “Enough is enough. The Department must comply with this subpoena and turn over the documents we are requesting. New Yorkers deserve answers.”
