Ranking Member Thompson Statement on DHS Law Enforcement Assaulting Senator Padilla
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on Federal law enforcement, under the direction of wannabe fascist dictator Donald Trump, violently accosted and handcuffed a Democratic U.S. Senator in Los Angeles today:
“As the former Chairman of the January 6 Committee, I know a direct attack on democracy when I see it – and what happened to Senator Padilla today is clearly an attack on our democracy. He identified himself more than once, was attacked by law enforcement personnel, dragged out of a press conference simply trying to ask questions on behalf of his constituents, and was thrown to the floor as if he was a common criminal. If they can do what they did to a United States Senator, can you imagine what they can do to the rest of us?
“We’re a better country than this. Democrats will hold Secretary Noem accountable for today’s actions. She must answer as to why DHS law enforcement acted so unprofessionally. She must answer as to how her Department treats not only immigrants but U.S. Citizens. She must answer as to why she and her Department are constantly stifling free speech and rejecting accountability.
“It’s clear Trump and Noem think they’re above the law and want no oversight. They don’t want Congress or the American people to question what they do, they just want us to do what they say. There’s no way in hell we’re going to let them get away with it.”
