Ranking Members Thompson, Kennedy Statement on Trump and Kristi Noem’s Plan to Eliminate FEMA This Year
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Tim Kennedy (D-NY), Ranking Member of the Emergency Management and Technology subcommittee, released the joint statement below on President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s continued nonsense comments on FEMA and their ‘plan’ to eliminate it:
“President Trump’s comments about eliminating FEMA after this hurricane season are a reckless betrayal of the American people. It has been clear for quite some time that when it comes to emergency management and disaster response, President Trump and Kristi Noem have shown incompetence, manufactured chaos, and a disgusting indifference to human life.
“For decades, FEMA has been a critical part of how the Federal government responds to hurricanes and other disasters to protect people and property. Eliminating this critical agency means getting rid of a safety net for millions of people that rely on the Federal government when disaster strikes. We cannot pull the rug out from underneath states – which may or may not have resources available – and insist they be ready to handle back-to-back, large-scale disasters by themselves.
“After all his blustering – and lies – about the Biden administration not supporting disaster survivors, Trump vowed today to ‘give out less money’ for disasters. He is sending a very clear message: in a crisis, don’t expect help from this President.”
