Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Trump Illegally Sending Marines and More National Guard Troops to Los Angeles
(WASHINGTON) – (WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on President Trump sending Marines and more National Guard to Los Angeles:
“Once again, Donald Trump and his ghoulish minions continue to purposely inflame a crisis of their own making. Despite the lies his administration is spreading with its wall-to-wall media tour, there is zero need to send the National Guard – or active-duty Marines – to Los Angeles. Doing so against the will of the Governor is illegal and should be reversed in court.
“The American people will realize that any chaos is of Trump and his administration’s own making. This is yet another way for Trump to distract Americans from his many failings and act out his authoritarian fantasies. Trump wants to quell all dissent and hates anyone who exercises their First Amendment rights to protest his horrific policies, but we will not allow him to continue to trample on the Constitution. Congressional oversight of the executive branch is not optional.
“We will never forget that on January 6, 2021, the President refused to deploy the National Guard for a violent and deadly insurrection. Of course, this time he jumped at the chance to – wrongly – use them in LA. The hypocrisy is stratospheric. But just like January 6, it's clear Trump is more than willing to stoke violence if he thinks it will help him politically.
“Spare us the fake outrage.”
