Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Trump’s Election Security Lies

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on President Trump's lie-ridden address to the nation tonight on “election security”:

"Donald Trump has chosen to use a primetime address to the nation to – once again – find a new way to relitigate his well-documented 2020 election defeat. You cannot imagine a more glaring example of a President consumed by his own grievances and craven lust for power rather than the challenges facing the American people.

“Foreign countries have tried to interfere in elections for years. This is not new. His repackaging of old lies with old, cherry-picked intelligence to try to confuse the American people will not change the outcome of the 2020 election, will not change outcome of the nearly 60 lawsuits rejecting his election fraud claims, and will not change the fact that the 2020 election was the secure. He lost big, and the President offered no evidence tonight that challenges that conclusion.

“For nearly six years, Donald Trump has refused to accept reality. But we will not allow any speech, any executive order, or conspiracy to be used as an excuse for him to take over Federal elections. The President has no Constitutional role when it comes to elections and he never will.

“For years, Democrats have supported helping States invest in modern, secure election equipment for over a decade. Republicans fought us at every turn. Democrats also have advocated for CISA's election security support workforce and for funding the EI-ISAC. The President ended both.

“To persist in Trump’s delusions and fantasies is not just humiliating and beneath the office of the Presidency, it is dangerous to our elections and our democracy. The American people are tired of our narcissistic President putting his ego ahead of their needs. Congress cannot cow to this pathetic spectacle of a wannabe dictator. We must put the President in check, support State and local election officials this fall, and get back to the work of making life better for the American people.”
